What is Provigil?
Provigil is a prescription medicine used to develop wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness (ES) due to one of the following diagnosed sleep disorders: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), shift work sleep disorder (SWSD), or narcolepsy.
How should I take it?
Take Provigil exactly as told by your doctor. You can take it with or without food.
If you take more than your prescribed dose, or take it too late in your waking day, you may find it harder to go to sleep. Ask your doctor if doubts you have.
What are the possible side effects?
Side effects with this drug are rare. If any experience, inform your doctor immediately. Only your doctor can decide if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.
Side effects are: stuffy nose, diarrhea, back pain, headache, nausea, nervousness, anxiety, trouble sleeping, dizziness, upset stomach.
Severe side effects may include: chest pain, mental problems, and allergic reactions such as rash or hives.
What should I tell my doctor before taking Provigil?
Provigil affects the central nervous system. It can cause effects that may harm your thinking or reactions. Caution is advised if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. Stay away from other dangerous activity until you know how this medication will affect your level of wakefulness.
Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine. This drug may not be right to use if you have some medical conditions. It is essential for you to inform about them before taking it. These conditions include liver problems, cirrhosis, kidney problems, heart problems (e.g., chest pain, recent heart attack, mitral valve prolapse, enlarged ventricle), or high blood pressure.
Besides it can not be used in patients having allergy its ingredients. Notify your pharmacist if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (e.g., phenelzine). Tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
- if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
- if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
- if you have if you have a history of mental problems (e.g., bipolar disorder, depression), suicidal thoughts or actions, or alcohol or other substance abuse or dependence
What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Provigil?
The following drug may cause severe reactions if used with this drug: antidepressants, carbamazepine, clomipramine, cyclosporine, diazepam, itraconazole, ketoconazole, MAOIs, methylphenidate, oral contraceptives and hormonal implants, phenobarbital, phenytoin, propranolol, rifampin, theophylline, and warfarin.
Can I take Provigil if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
The special effects of Provigil during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unidentified. Let your doctor know immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose the moment you remember, but avoid taking the drug if you don’t have planning to be wakeful for several hours. If it is close to your normal bedtime hour, skip the missed dose and wait until the next day to take the medicine again. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Contact your doctor immediately if you think you have taken too much of this medicine. Overdose may cause confusion, trouble sleeping, nausea, or diarrhea.
